ACI Saves 59% on Manual Labor

Alameda County Industries (ACI), a MRF in the San Francisco Bay Area, processes about 300 TPD. They operate five days a week with two shifts Monday - Friday. They turned to EverestLabs to see if we could help address labor challenges, operate more efficiently, save on landfill costs, and recover more.

ACI struggled with maintaining a fully staffed plant amid high turnover and safety concerns. In addition, the average fully loaded cost for each person is about $85,000/year. This cost combined with the staffing shortage made it difficult for ACI to run efficiently and produce consistent and high-quality bales.

EverestLabs consulted with ACI to understand their facility and concerns so that we could place their first RecycleOS system (AI and robotic cell) in the most valuable spot. We found that the aluminum QC line was the most valuable commodity and it only took a few hours to install the entire system and get it up and running.

After having RecycleOS installed several things stood out to ACI.

ACI saw a 59% reduction in labor costs and saw over 500,000 non-recyclable objects picked off their aluminum QC line.
The robot had a >99% uptime during operating hours.
With the RecycleOS Robotic Operating Center (ROC), they didn’t need to babysit the robot. EverestLabs’ ROC monitored their system 24/7 and would alert them within minutes if any issues were discovered.
The data provided by RecycleOS helped them understand what was going on through their QC line so they could optimize upstream equipment parameters.

Next Steps

CMI plans to use the learnings from this successful initiative to support additional UBC capture equipment at MRFs, further enhancing the recycling industry's efficiency. CMI and EverestLabs are now looking to expand their partnership and are exploring placing a robotic system in another MRF.
