CMI's research highlighted that up to one in four aluminum beverage cans is missorted at a typical MRF, which sort single-stream recyclables. This loss of cans results in substantial revenue loss for MRFs.

The need to capture these valuable recyclables prompted CMI to explore innovative solutions that could be easily retrofitted into existing sorting facilities and that could deliver revenue back to CMI that it could use to then fund additional can capture equipment in MRFs.

CMI utilized a unique financing model to fund a robot at Caglia. They secured funding from Ardagh Metal Packaging and Crown Holdings to fully finance the two-year equipment lease for Caglia. In return, Caglia agreed to share 50 percent of the revenue generated from the UBCs with CMI. The economics of the sorting and EverestLabs’ flexible, all-inclusive model made this program possible.

Since installation, EverestLabs AI and robotics is recovering an average of 1,565 UBCs per day.

This not only reduces carbon emissions and waste sent to landfills but also generates revenue for both Caglia and CMI.

When there are no UBCs present to pick, EverestLabs can prioritize picking missed containers, further increasing material recovery.

Next Steps

CMI plans to use the learnings from this successful initiative to support additional UBC capture equipment at MRFs, further enhancing the recycling industry's efficiency. CMI and EverestLabs are now looking to expand their partnership and are exploring placing a robotic system in another MRF.
